Horticulture Progamme
(Thursday 22 July 2004 11:01:35 am)
In February of 2004, a Women's Horticulture Training Group was formed. Twelve women started in the group, and they are enrolled in a Certificate II in Horticulture with Charles Darwin University.
Tuesdays is their training day, and there is a range of activities happening from one week to the next. The group has organised themselves to work on Monday's and Wednesday's which allows them to practice the skills they have been learning during thier training sessions.
Regular trips out onto country allows for training in plants identification and seed or plant material collection, which will in turn, be grown back at the community for future planting around the community .
A range of plants including, bush tucker, colour plants, art plants and medicine plants are being collected and grown by the women in small areas which has been set aside in one of the trainee yard. The women are doing a great job looking after these plants during the week. At the moment, there are around 200 plants being grown in the temporary nursery.
Plans are being discussed to construct a nursery in the grounds surrounding the Women's Centre. This will allow the women to work on producing plants for many projects which will be based in or around the Women's Centre.
